In 2010, during the summer solstice, artists Rachel Waldrop (nee Reese) and Trevor Reese traveled to Iceland for a residency at Skaftfell in Seyðisfjörður. The journey included a two-week circumnavigation of the island—along Route 1, commonly referred to as the Ring Road—with a one-week stay in the former home of Icelandic artist Birgir Andrésson.
During their exploration of the island, Rachel Waldrop (nee Reese) carried a small theatrical stage set, comprising red velvet drapes within a wooden frame mounted on a tripod, utilized as a photographic travel prop to reveal the vastly dramatic and changing landscapes of the island nation. The resulting video and accompanying photographs are included in the exhibition Ring Road, along with new sculptures by Trevor Reese, which were inspired by Iceland's dynamic plant life.
